Columbus State University, more often referred to as simply CSU, is a four-year public university located in Columbus, which is the county seat of Muscogee County, situated in the US state of Georgia, with a population estimated at a number of more than 190 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which makes it the 3rd largest city and the 4th largest metropolitan area in the state, as well as the 121st largest city in the country.
Columbus State was established in 1958, first starting as a junior college, under the name of Columbus College. In 1996, 33 years after the institution was relocated to the midtown area, Columbus College became Columbus State University, being renamed as part of a program to restructure four-year institutions within the state's university system.
Today, the university, which has a student enrollment approximated at a number of over 8000, offers undergraduate and graduate programs in more than ninety academic disciplines, including in business, in which it has received special recognition, offering a reputable MBA program, the institution also being renowned for its servant leadership program.
CSU's athletic teams are known as the Cougars, who compete in NCAA Division II, in all the traditional college sports for men and women, which include basketball, softball, baseball and tennis. Their distinctive colors are blue, red and white, and their mascot is Cody Cougar.
